Projects for Scouts
Projects for Scouts give youth an opportunity to build something useful. Make sure your project is appropriate for the age group and don’t forget about safety instruction for any tools you will be using.
Do you have ideas for projects for Scouts that you’d like to share? Contact me and I’ll share it here. If you have a photos of your project, I’ll add those also.
Useful Items
Leather Bookmark Project
A leather bookmark project is suitable for those who are new to the art of leatherwork. It is simple enough for those not familiar with leatherwork, but it includes the basics of cutting, punching, and stamping. This is one of my favorite projects for Cub Scouts.
Water Bottle Holder
Here are some water bottle holder projects I came across recently. Scouts will want to keep their water bottles with them when they can carry them in a water bottle holder they made themselves.
Duct Tape Wallet
I came across this idea and thought they would enjoy it. After all, what Scout doesn’t enjoy using duct tape?
Tic Tac Toe Game
I thought this would make a good project for my Webelos. We’ll made this in December to give away as Christmas presents.
Duct Tape Napkin Rings
Scouts can never do too many duct tape crafts! I found these very cute duct tape napkin rings and the instructions.
Tin Can Lanterns
Tin can lanterns makes a very versatile craft project for Cub Scouts. You can make the holes in any pattern you like – a star for Christmas, a ghost for Halloween, a heart for Valentine’s day. Webelos and Bears can…
Hiking Stick
Cub Scouts love to get their pocketknives out and strip bark from fallen sticks. Why not make it into a hiking stick project?
Camp Gadget Projects
Boot Scraper Camp Gadget
Here is a really simple camp gadget I saw at a camporee a few years back. It was a simple boot scraper camp gadget for scraping the mud off of the bottom of the boots.
Hand Washing Station Gadget
This is a gadget which was shown to us at a recent Roundtable. It uses lashings to make a handwashing station from straight sticks and an empty gallon milk jug.
Pot and Towel Rack Camp Gadget
These instructions are for a pot and towel drying rack. There is a small picture of a similar gadget in the Scouts BSA handbook.
Neckerchief Slide Projects
Seed Neckerchief Slide
Several years ago I attended a Cub Scout Pow Wow session on neckerchief slide crafts. They showed us a number of ways to make neckerchief slides from various materials.
Easy Neckerchief Slide Holder
Making and collecting neckerchief slides is a Scouting tradition. A neckerchief slide holder will help keep them organized.
Wolf Neckerchief Slide
Neckerchief slide projects are good for younger Scouts. This slide is a fun way to get Cub Scouts involved in this tradition.
Mini Cub Scout Handbook
John A. (Cubmaster of Pack 528 in Cascade Pacific Council, NW Oregon/SW Washington) sent me this idea for a Cub Scout neckerchief slide which looks like a little Cub Scout handbook. Thanks John!
Clock Neckerchief Slide
Cub Scouts can make this simple neckerchief on their own. Use it as a gathering activity with the Turn Back the Clock theme.
STEM Projects
Build a Craft Stick Catapult
When Scouts build a catapult, they can learn about physics and energy. An easy way to do this is with a small scale craft stick catapult. There is also a video explanation of how to build a Craft Stick Catapult
Pinewood Derby Cars
I’ve told the Cub Scouts that they can count work on their Pinewood Derby cars towards any appropriate craft or building requirement, such as the Build It adventure, if they did a significant amount of work on the cars themselves. Cub Scouts also learn some physics concepts as they test their cars.
Egg Drop Challenge – An Engineering Project
In an egg drop challenge, Scouts try to design a container which can prevent an egg from breaking when dropped. This is an excellent project to get kids interested in science and engineering.
Gourd Birdhouse
Use dried gourds to make a birdhouse. If you didn’t grow any yourself, you can probably find some in your area at a farmer’s market or even a craft shop.
