The 1 Yard Magic Apron Pattern is one of the most popular patterns here on the SewCanShe blog. Even someone who is a beginner at sewing can sew a beautiful apron to share as a gift or protect their clothes while cooking, and who doesn’t have a yard of fabric? I love the large pockets.

The simplicity of this apron makes it:

  • perfect if you are sewing for a guy
  • great for adding embroidery
  • good for teaching someone sewing skills like how to pin, hem, fold and press, and topstitch.

I designed the Full Coverage BBQ Apron pattern with a man or a woman in mind because my husband tends to ruin his shirts when barbecuing. I used cute BBQ themed fabric to sew these double layer aprons so they provide extra protection against splatters! I used plain muslin for the back, but if you use cute fabric on both sides then it will be a reversible apron too.

This DIY apron also has longer ties at the waist and adjustable neck straps.

Got some leftover jelly roll strips? You need to make a mile a minute jelly roll apron! The front pockets on this apron are the only part that are not sewn from 2 1/2” strips and I love the cute angled position that is also comfortable to use.

This is also a two layered apron so no hemming, just sew the two layers right sides together, turn, and top stitch!

kids apron pattern

Here’s a free kids apron pattern that has been made in a similar style to the BBQ Apron above. How cute would a Father/Son or Mother/Daughter matching set be as a gift? This one is Melissa’s Adorable BBQ Apron For Kids. I also included it because it would make a graet kids’ art smock – don’t you think?

The neck and waist straps are made out of double fold bias tape which saves time.

A collection of free apron patterns would not be complete with out a crossover style apron too. The Tessuti Apron Pattern is a free PDF download – just add it to your shopping cart and checkout for free. This example is sewn from luxurious linen fabric, but I think it would be wonderful in quilting cotton or cotton duck fabric too.

The large front pocket is a great feature too. You’ll need a bit more fabric to make this style of apron, but it will be worth it!

Free Patterns for Pinafore Aprons

I love the nostalgic and pretty look of a pinafore apron! Here is a gorgeous pattern for a woman’s Pinafore Apron with rick rack trim on the skirt edges and on the bib. I love it!

Melissa also sewed this darling child’s apron and shared the free pattern on the blog. She made this one in a farmhouse style that is so delightful. This apron also has rick rack on the skirt, but don’t you think it would be cute with pom pom trim too?

Free Half Apron Patterns

Sometimes a half apron is all you need and this one is probably it. My Cute and Modern Pocket Apron tutorial is a great choice with a free tutorial. All you need to cut is rectangles!

Who wants to sew an apron and matching bag with just a yard of fabric? This darling Hostess Apron and Tote Bag from 1 Yard of Fabric turned out so cute.

The straight seams on the apron are great practice for a novice at the sewing machine. The ties are long enough to wrap around the the front bar apron style.

Maureen Cracknell’s Fabric Lover’s Apron is one of my most inspiring free sewing tuotrials ever! Use your favorite fabric scraps and sew an apron you won’t ever want to take off. Or it’s the perfect gift for another fabric enthusiast.
