Easy Dinner Rolls

These dinner rolls are perfectly flakey, buttery and soft. They remind me of the Rhodes dinner rolls I grew up eating! They go perfectly with soups, salads, dinners or to serve during the holidays. The hardest part of this recipe is waiting for the dough to rise!

This recipe makes 15 dinner rolls. Perfect for a crowd! Best of all you only need 7 ingredients to make these fluffy dinner rolls. This truly is the best dinner roll recipe! Heres what youll need:

Ingredients

  • Milk: I use 2% because we always have that on hand. Whole milk could be used as well.
  • Yeast: I always use instant yeast however active yeast can be used. The rising time will increase by about 30 minutes.
  • Honey: I love the flavor of honey in these rolls. If you dont have honey you can substitute granulated sugar.
  • Egg: Is used to structure the bread as well as help it rise.
  • Butter: Adds flavor and makes the rolls soft and fluffy.
  • Salt: Helps structure the bread and adds flavor.
  • Flour: I use all purpose flour in this recipe however bread flour or whole wheat flour can be used.
  • Optional: I like to do an egg wash (1 egg whisked with 1 tablespoon of water). You can also do melted butter brushed on top as well.

How to make Dinner Rolls

  • Make dough: Add the milk and yeast to a stand mixer and stir to combine. Let sit for 5 minutes. Add the honey, egg, butter, salt and 1 cup of the flour. Beat until combined then scrape the sides of the bowl. Add the remaining flour and beat for 2-3 minutes or until the dough is combined and forms a ball. If the dough still looks sticky and is not forming into a ball add more flour. (I start at 3 cups and work my way up to 3 1/2 if needed)
  • Rise (1st time): Working with floured hands grab ball of dough and transfer to a large bowl sprayed with nonstick cooking spray or oil. Rotate the ball of dough to coat in the oil. Cover with a towel and place in a warm area to double in size about 90 minutes.
  • Divide and shape into rolls: Grease a 9 x 13 pan with nonstick cooking spray, set aside. Once dough has doubled punch it down and roll into 15 balls.
  • Rise (2nd time): Place the dough balls in the prepared baking pan and cover to rise for another hour.
  • Bake: In a 350 degree oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Serve: Rolls are best served warm brushed with extra butter on top!
  • Store: In an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Variations

  • Herb Rolls: Add 2 tablespoons fresh or 2 teaspoons dried thyme, rosemary or basil.
  • Garlic: Add fresh or powdered garlic.
  • Cheese: Shredded sharp cheddar would be amazing mixed in and shredded on top!

Tips

  • If you dont have a stand mixer you can still make these rolls! Simply knead dough by hand until no longer sticky and the dough comes together.
  • To make these yeast dinner rolls an equal size I like to spread my dough out into a rectangle and cut into 15 pieces. Another way to get the same size rolls is to measure the dough on a kitchen scale and divide the number of rolls you want to make. This will give you how many ounces each roll should be!

Can these dinner rolls be made ahead of time?

Yes! You can follow the directions up until the 2nd rise. Then place unbaked rolls covered in the fridge overnight. Allow them to come to room temperature while the oven is preheating and bake as directed. You can also freeze these unbaked rolls for up to a month!
