Fried Cheese Curds ~ Easy Appetizer Recipe

Cheese curds are simply cheddar cheese that hasn't been aged or pressed into a wheel. They have a mild cheddar taste and when breaded and deep fried, they become melty and delicious.

Ingredients for Fried Cheese Curds

Ingredients Needed:

  • Cheese Curds  
  • All Purpose Flour
  • Eggs
  • Buttermilk ~ If you need a substitute, add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice to a cup of milk. 
  • Panko Bread Crumbs  
  • Dried Basil
  • Dried Thyme
  • Dried Oregano
  • Vegetable Oil ~ for frying

How to Make Fried Cheese Curds:

  • Make a breading station by adding flour to one bowl, beat the eggs and buttermilk together in another. Add the panko, basil, thyme, oregano and salt into a third bowl and mix to combine. 
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil. 
  • Dredge the cheese curds in the flour, then dip in the egg mixture. Roll in bread crumbs. Repeat with the egg mixture and then finish in the bread crumbs.

  • Place on the lined baking sheet in a single layer.
  • Next, place the breaded cheese curds in the freezer for 45 minutes.

  • Heat the oil in a heavy pan over high heat to 350°.

  • Fry the cheese curds a few at a time until golden brown, about 1 - 2 minutes each.

  • Remove to wire rack over a paper towel lined baking sheet.

How to Store and Reheat:

  • Fried cheese curds are best served fresh. If you have leftovers, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in an air fryer at 350° for 3-4 minutes or in the oven at 400° for 5- 8 minutes.

  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3 cups vegetable oil for frying

  9. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
